Recovery Tips Following a Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty Before and After PhotosIf you are unhappy with the appearance of your nose or are having trouble breathing due to a deviated septum, rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, can help correct these issues. After you choose your well-qualified and experienced board-certified plastic surgeon to perform your rhinoplasty, the next step is to get ready for your recovery. Preparation is the key to having a safe and comfortable recovery process.

Getting Ready for Nose Surgery

It is important that rhinoplasty patients carefully consider their decision for undergoing surgery, and what goals they are hoping to achieve, in addition to listening and discussing all of this with their surgeon. During your consultation with your doctor, be sure to ask plenty of questions to reduce any concerns, fears, and anxieties. Getting ready for surgery is sometimes a month-long process. Smoking and the consumption of certain medications can greatly slow down the healing process. Therefore, to reduce the risk for complications associated with surgery, patients must stop smoking at least two to four weeks before surgery and discontinue use of any aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, or herbal supplements.

Patients should also plan to have someone drive them to and from the procedure, and patients will need a family member or friend to help them during the first few days of the recovery. They will be there to monitor you, make sure you are taking your medication at the correct times, and assist you with getting food and drinks.

After Surgery

Once you are home from the hospital, the next few weeks will require a lot downtime. During the first few weeks, it is important for rhinoplasty patients to get plenty of rest, avoid bumping, touching, or blowing the nose, and not participate in any physical activity.

To reduce any additional swelling, patients should avoid salty or high-sodium foods a few days before and a few days after surgery. Also, it is crucial for patients to keep their head upright at all times, this will involve sleeping with the head of the bed elevated.

The results of rhinoplasty will be apparent immediately after the bandages are removed. Depending on the patient, swelling and bruising may be visible for a few weeks, and the swelling may take up to a year to completely resolve.
